A close friend of mine graduated from his nurse practitioner training in the Fall of 2019 and started at a clinic in the Bronx in January of 2020. When COVID hit, he and everyone he worked with continued to go into work. The way he explained it to me was that there were a lot of people he had begun to see as regular patients, who's problems were far beyond that of COVID. Every other day or so we would speak on the phone and he would tell me the latest stories. The most devastating, and the hardest on him as a nurse practitioner, was when his patient, a nine-year old girl with asthma, passed away due to COVID complications. My friend was very upset for a long time, despite having gone above and beyond to help her keep her asthma and breathing difficulties in check. I am grateful to have this friend and be close to a person in the world who does this every day. This piece is made in honor of the girl that passed.
